Even though teachers have “eyes in the back of their heads,” we can’t be everywhere during field trips, so responsible parent chaperones are a must to safely and successfully extend students’ learning outside the classroom.
Dominique recently asked the WeAreTeachers HELPLINE! for advice on preparing parent chaperones. Here are some do’s and don’ts to ensure your parent chaperones are well equipped to help you provide a safe, stress-free and spectacular field trip experience!
Do write out important information. Prepare an informational sheet that lists: students’ names, itinerary, departure location, goals for the trip, emergency contact information and any other important instructions your chaperones should know.
Do explain roles and responsibilities. Have a brief meeting with chaperones before you leave school to set expectations. “Too many parents want to chaperone to be ‘buddies’ with the kids rather than to help them stay safe and learn.”–Scott “I ask them to be responsible for monitoring all students that are assigned to them at all times. They need to be cognizant of departure times and inform me of any problems that may have taken place on the trip.”–Angelique Do give out an emergency contact number.
Make sure chaperones know how to contact you in the event of an emergency. If you aren’t comfortable giving out your personal cell phone number, find out if your school has a pre-paid phone you can take with you. If not, you can use a program like Google Voice.
“I use Google Voice. It rings to my cell, and my personal number is still personal.”–Elena Don’t underestimate cell phone usage. Some chaperones may end up doing more texting and talking on their cell phones than supervising students. “I generally say something like this: ‘Please pay close attention to the students in your group.
Once, on a field trip, my parent volunteers got so busy talking to each other and on their cell phones, they weren’t paying much attention to the students! It made me super nervous!’ It comes out sounding caring but not controlling.”–Lydia Don’t assume chaperones are in the clear.
Some districts require parents to undergo a background check prior to supervising students on a field trip. “Check and see if your district has a set policy… I had to get a background check done before I could go as a chaperone for my granddaughter’s class.”–Susan Don’t forget say, “Thank you!” Remember that field trips aren’t possible without parent volunteers. Make sure you give parents your heartfelt thanks for their time and effort to make the day a success!

There was something so sweet about past generations and (you know, aside from the occasional blatant sexism).
Think back to any rom-com circa the 1950s, and you'll see exactly what I mean. Couples got super gussied up, they hit the town in a whirlwind of flowers and candlelit restaurants, and then followed it all up with a love note.
It was ro- mantic, and I kinda think we should bring it back. Of course, I'm not saying young couples of today don't do sweet things. Our generation is pretty darn good at dating, and we have our fair share of amazing dating rituals.
(I'm also not saying our dates have to involve flowers or notes — if that's not your thing.) But I do think there's something fun about trying a few cute date ideas from years gone by. These rituals might even make the whole dating process a helluva lot more successful, if that's what you're aiming for. As says, "I firmly believe that those 'vintage' ways are what connects and grounds couples in long-lasting relationships." If you'd like some examples, read on. Whether you've been with your SO for forever, or simply want to bring some old-fashioned , I promise it'll be fun to give a few of 'em a try.
1. Getting All Dressed Up Back in the day, couples got all sorts of . Skirts, heels, ties, jewels — the works. And while some of us still go this route, I'd say casual dates are a bit more popular. While that's perfectly OK (and so comfy), there are some benefits to gettin' fancy. As tells me, it shows you're both excited to hit the town, and can even make things feel extra special.
Definitely worth it, if you ask me. 2. Calling To Ask Them Out (Before you close this window and never read anything online ever again, take a second to hear me out.) Back in the day, it used to be the norm to show up on dates with a chaperone.
They kept things on the "level," but mostly acted as a sort of vetting system. People still do this today, except now — and it's actually a really good idea. A double date "chaperone" can help you feel more comfortable, Finelli tells me, while also providing a chance for friends' to give feedback. (See? All good things.) 9. Offering Your Coat Or Scarf I wonder what was considered rude before phones existed. Whipping out a newspaper mid-date?
Or maybe pulling out a book? You'd never do that, so , either. "This is rude and shows a lack of interest," says Salkin. "It says you feel there is something more important in your phone than the person in front of you." And that's not cool.
11. But Do Call Them To Chat Phones do have a place in modern dating, as they did in decades gone by. Just make sure you expand your repertoire beyond simple texting.
"We should go back to old-fashioned phone conversations," says Gopman. Not only does a real convo offer a better chance for connection, she tells me, it can also spare you those confusing (and possibly date-ruining) text misunderstandings.
12. Showing Some Manners Even if you two decide to poke fun at the whole "manners" things, it can still be fun to do it up . On your next date night, light a few candles, put forks in the correct place on the table, and sit down to a beautiful meal (or pizza). Say please, say thank you, and enjoy being fancy.
13. Walking Your Date Home First thing's first: You should feel perfectly free to end the date however you damn well please. There is something very smooth, though, — and kinda sexy — about with a goodnight kiss. As Scharf tells me, all you need to do is give them a proper goodnight kiss (whatever that means to you), and then stroll off into the sunset. So movie-esque. 15. Following Up. Always. Apparently, as tells me, people used to call each other after a date.
In the era of nonstop ghosting, this sounds just about as antiquated as it gets. So let's try to bring it back. After your date, go ahead and . Say thank you, make plans for another outing, or just tell them how much fun you had. Because that's what this old-timey dating stuff is all about — having fun while making each other feel special. And really, it doesn't get much better than that. Images: Pexels (16); Bustle

Jehovah's Witnesses practice dating with chaperones. Christians of the quiver-full movement, such as the Duggar family, practice dating with chaperones. Most traditional Catholics who reject the changes from the Second Vatican Council (1962-1965) practice dating with chaperones. These small groups of Christian communities believe that dating with chaperones has nothing to do with age. If you're a minor or an adult, every couple should have a chaperone until the day of marriage.
Though this practice has been criticized by most modern Christians, saying that this sort of behavior sets couples up for failed marriages. Why do they say this? The purpose is to prevent premarital sex, but it also prevents people from getting to truly know each other on an intimate level.
Couples should abstain from sex because they love God and want to glorify them in that way, not because there is someone else preventing them. If a couple needs chaperones, maybe they're relationship with God isn't very strong. Probably because it inhibits communication between the two people. If someone else is there, the couple never has a chance to converse openly and honestly...
Probably because it inhibits communication between the two people. If someone else is there, the couple never has a chance to converse openly and honestly in a private conversation.
If the first time they get to do that is after marriage, and then they decide that they don't like each other after all, it's too late. They also may discover, after it's too late, that they have no sexual chemistry, there is no spark to their kisses, they don't like sex, and with out a chaperone around, the other person is actually a huge pain in the A$$.
People are on their best behavior in front of a chaperone. It's only when two people can be alone, even to talk, that the true colors come out.
It is very important to see true colors before committing to marriage. Chaperoned dating is a very good idea. There's nothing wrong with maintaining purity until marriage for both of them.
More marriages would work out... Chaperoned dating is a very good idea. There's nothing wrong with maintaining purity until marriage for both of them. More marriages would work out better sexually if there had been only one partner - their spouse - that way both know nothing except for each other after marriage.
IMHO those who believe that this practice sets the couple up for failure forget that there's much more to marriage than hopping into bed. Getting to know each other without sexual involvement helps the couple stay together successfully in the long run. The interesting thing is that everybody has an opinion but most don't have a clue as to the basic human rudiments of growing in love and commitment to each other through just getting to know the person you want to spend your life with. No sex helps keep your eyes wide open to quirks, behaviors, communication style, like and dislikes, and so much more.
Way to go. Chaperoned dating sounds like indeed the way to go. First off, i'd like to point out that all Christians do not believe in this, and Christians are not the only ones. to answer your first question-it depends on the couple.
i'd find it hard to open up enough to get to REALLY know the other person enough to marry them with someone constantly watching our every move. then, after marriage, when our true selves come out, it may be something that i can't live with. The people that do enforce this need to learn to trust the dating couples.
If they have been taught well, then there should be no worry. I find it WAY extreme that anyone would require all dating be chaperoned, past a certain age. I can't imagine why having chaperones would set someone up for a failed marriage. I guess there are those out there that would say they need to... I can't imagine why having chaperones would set someone up for a failed marriage.
I guess there are those out there that would say they need to experience things for themselves first. My mother was of this mentality and actually told me I needed to have sex with someone before I married them! Good thing I didn't listen to her. Please, you can make it work you don't have to make sure before hand;) There is nothing wrong with chaperoned and group dating.
What a great way to get to know someone! Then later on go on private dates with the intention of possible marriage down the road. I believe that we date to find our mate, the one who we will marry and not just for fun.
You court to find out if you're compatible and you have a connection then decide IF you can see yourself with each other forever:) I didn't always have this view but then wasn't always a believer either lol. Before I was saved I fell into the common world-view that dating was simply to go out and have a good time.
Not to find your future spouse. I didn't believe in love though either as I had poor examples growing up. That's why it was so funny that after instantly hitting it off with the new guy at work it wasn't long that we decided we would be married some day!
Crazy about the Lord's plans and how they fall into place:) We didn't have chaperones but we did go out a few time with a group of friends.
Later I ended up moving in with he and his parents. It was perfect actually because it allowed us to see each other in a way we normally wouldn't and yet have the safety there (his parents). Unfortunately there were ways around the radar but eh. It was a great opportunity to live together without living together alone. Dating alone can bring on pressure and it of course depends on the maturity and boundaries of those involved.
Most could do well with group or chaperoned dates. Best of luck and blessings :) The idea I assume is to keep the couple from having sex before their marriage. After seeing the result of not doing this, I would think that this is a good practice. Sex outside of marriage is not a good idea because it just doesn't set the right tone for a long and lasting marriage.
Also, it degrades women. The chaperone gives some discipline to abstinence until married. Asking costs 5 points and then choosing a best answer earns you 3 points!
