Wednesday 27 Sep 2017 9:02 pm We don’t know about you, but we’ve been pretty much hooked on Celebs Go Dating over the past few weeks. Yup, the antics of Calum Best, Arg, Charlotte Dawson and all the others have been keeping everybody hugely entertained in their efforts to find love.
But while it might all look like fun and games – with dinner and drinks thrown in – on the surface, there’s a whole lot of work involved in putting the show together, as you might imagine.
Advertisement Here, the show’s relationship guru Eden Blackman spills a few secrets to us about all those things you don’t see on camera… 1 There’s no shortage of celebs who want Eden and Lady Nadia Essex to sort out their lives on the show.
‘On series one we were involved very lightly [with choosing the celebs] and now celebrities are coming to us,’ Eden explains. ‘Since series three I’ve had a lot of DMs from verified accounts on Twitter saying “I love the series, how can I get involved?” and I tell them series four is coming soon, as soon as it’s announced get your representation in to speak to Channel 4/Lime, and we’ll all sit down and have a conversation about it.’ 2 And yes, they do favour a certain type of celebrity.
‘We go for celebs that are going to be good entertainment, we go for celebs that are going to be good value, and we go for celebs that we know are going to test us but in some way reward us.’ This lot have provided a lot of entertainment this series (Picture: E4) 3 Meanwhile, it goes without saying that they can’t be in a relationship either.
‘They’ve got to be single and they’ve got to listen to us, that’s the parameters we have,’ Eden reveals. 4 That doesn’t mean that Eden doesn’t have his eye on certain people they’d love to have on the show. ‘There’s a couple of people I’d really love to get into the series but it’s a case of seeing if it fits with them. The show isn’t for everyone, it fits a certain demographic and a certain audience, there’s no point in wishing for people who aren’t going to be part of it.’ Have you got a mate who wouldn't go on a date because of a Star sign?
— Celebs Go Dating (@CelebsGoDating) 6 Eden and Lady Nadia don’t actually attend the dates – which means that they can sometimes get a bit of a surprise about the previous night’s events. ‘I think we were surprised when Charlotte and Frankie went on a double date and ended up in each other’s arms,’ he says. ‘We definitely knew there was a little bit of spark between them but we didn’t expect anything would happen. The morning after the night of a date you’re always wondering what’s going to end up on your desk.
7 While Arg might have been fortunate enough to end up at a curry house on one of his double dates, he didn’t actually pick it himself – since the locations are all chosen by the crew. 8 And speaking of those locations, there’s no one specific restaurant or bar that they choose. The locations are all kind of recommendations really,’ Eden reveals, ‘Nadia and I live in London and we go out quite a lot to really good dinners and really good bars, we’ve got an amazing team at Lime Pictures who do a lot of scouting.
So they’re just really venues that would work for filming.’ Eden and Lady Nadia are often surprised by what goes on – here’s how they reacted to the news of Frankie Cocozza and Charlotte Dawson getting together (Picture: E4) 9 There are some stipulations though – the venue has to be a decent size to fit in all the production team – and it’s got to be a place where everyone feels happy.
As Eden explains: ‘It has to be somewhere you feel incredibly comfortable, and where all the crew can fit their cameras and equipment.’ Advertisement 10 There’s a whole lot of stuff that you don’t see on TV – with the dates lasting longer than you might think.
They’re a couple of hours I think, however long a regular date would be – there’s drinks, there’s dinner, there are obviously breaks during that as well – and sometimes they have to change lighting and different angles,’ Eden points out.
11 The celebs and the dates are only allowed to talk while filming’s actually taking place – and if there’s a break they have to keep shtum.’We have to make sure the datee and the celeb don’t talk during that at all,’ Eden tells us,’because it’s those little moments when the cameras are off that one of them will deliver an amazing line, so it’s a little bit different from your average date.’ 12 And while the dates might last a while, what you see on TV is a fraction of what happens.
‘The date is probably two – two and a half hours filming and you see maybe eight minutes tops.’ Celebs Go Dating airs weekdays at 10pm on E4.
