What is the best area for shopping and eating out ? We had made intital enquiries anout some hoteks that are in the business district just a few blocks north of the White House - would this be a good base ? Is it a good idea to stay in a hotel close to an underground station ? We're planning to be there for 7 nights - could we cover it comfortably in that time ? Many thanks as always I am on another thread but still trying to decide which Ritz to stay at. (Family discount so chepaest place for us to stay)I haven't been to DC for 25 years and it is my husband's first visit. A few TA members say 22nd street is best location but how much better is it than. Georgetown?

Hi everyone. My wife and I are planning our first ever trip to from Scotland. I'm just looking for some basic advice - I will be buying loads of books prior to my visit as I usually do but this would be a good starting point. It seems a failrly sprawling city - what are the best areas to base ourselves in ?

Is it a safe walking city ? The underground system seems very good - is it safe at night ? What is the best area for shopping and eating out ? We had made intital enquiries anout some hoteks that are in the business district just a few blocks north of the White House - would this be a good base ?

Is it a good idea to stay in a hotel close to an underground station ? We're planning to be there for 7 nights - could we cover it comfortably in that time ? Many thanks as always. #1 of 15 · It's a fairly sprawling city, but 99% of what the typical tourist wants to see (museums, memorials/monuments, and government buildings) is situated along or within a few blocks of the Mall, the two-mile long stretch of greenery that runs from the Capitol to the .

So access to the Mall area is essential, and yes, you absolutely want your hotel to be accessible to a Metro station to get to the Mall (if you're not walking distance and don't want to spring for a taxi) and some other nice commercial/entertainment districts in the city as well.

Obviously, all this comes at a price and a lot depends on what your budget can accomodate. Hotels in the Washington business districts (zip codes 20004, 20005, 20006) are probably the most expensive, but also closest to the action. Hotels in and are usually lower-priced, but provide easy access to the tourist areas a few stops away on the Metro. As a rule of thumb, you want to stay away from any hotel located in zipcode 20002. After following the rules of thumb in finding a hotel, then I'd come back and ask about the specific property that interests you.

Good luck! #4 of 15 · As only an occasional visit to DC, I am partial to the Old Town area. I believe that it is one of the best kept secrets of a DC visit. It is right on the Metro line King Street Station; only 2 stops from Reagan Airport; very yuppie and upper middle class area; restaurants and shops; along river front Potomac.

#6 of 15 · I am on another thread but still trying to decide which Ritz to stay at. (Family discount so chepaest place for us to stay)I haven't been to DC for 25 years and it is my husband's first visit.

A few TA members say 22nd street is best location but how much better is it than ? ( I love the look of the casualness of GT compared to the formal look of 22nd altho I realize we are only going to be sleeping there) We are good walkers and will have no problem using the Metro. I really don't think I wan to stay at City Ritz since there is no nice walking area around it.

I'd love some opinions. #7 of 15 · location is strange and interesting. It is off on a little street away from the stores and restaurants. But the heart of commercial is only a couple of blocks away. Lots of places to walk, including the Washington Harbor complex. BUT...it is really too far to walk to most of the usual tourist sites of DC.

And there is no Metro train station close by. There are Metro buses and the buses and the Blue Buses (which go to ) and taxis that will take you to most places. If location didn't matter at all, I would choose the Georgetown property without question, just because it is a unique hotel. The bar is in an old smokestack. #8 of 15 · Oh, boy--I was erading your reply and thought that's it--I definitely want to stay there--until I got to the point about "If location doesn't matter at all"--and everything I read says location does matter.

So...if I stayed in GT how much would a cab cost to get to the Mall area, ,etc.? PS--the bar sounds lovely and I'll bet the dirty martinis are great (and probably pricey, too, but if I limit myself to one...)
