The best reality show on television airs on MTV. It features people with whom you likely have little in common, and it's based on a documentary that is widely thought to be at least partially . Catfish the show (which airs Monday at 11 p.m.) is hosted by Nev, who reminds us repeatedly that he was duped by a middle-aged woman in Catfish the movie.

He has the blandly appealing quality of The Voice host Carson Daly, an unthreateningly handsome face that fronts a milquetoast investment in the lives of people who have inexplicably allowed themselves to be put on television and judged by an audience that watches reality shows made for teenagers. The premise of each episode is the same: A man or woman (The Hopeful) has been communicating with someone (The Fraudulent) online for an extended period of time — this season features correspondences ranging from eight months to a staggering ten years.

The Hopeful wants to have a relationship with The Fraudulent, with whom he or she has been e-mailing, texting, and speaking on the phone, but who refuses to Skype or meet in person. Nev and cameraman/voice of reason Max sit in coffee shops and search Facebook photos to see if they were stolen from another profile and say things like "Six friends — that's a bad sign." The reveal almost always turns out the same way: Nev, The Hopeful, and MTV's camera crew show up at an address, ring the doorbell, and a few minutes later, a sheepish and overweight person emerges and apologizes for pretending to be a petite blonde/Swedish art student/exotic dancer named Scorpio.

This formula varies occasionally: A man was exactly who he said he was but had gained a tremendous amount of weight (he clocked in at more than a quarter ton); a high school lesbian was getting her rocks off pretending to be a male model and sexting with an attractive nursing student; a young woman pretended to be a male model scout/producer in order to keep a woman from sleeping with her boyfriend.

The only happy ending the show has produced came in the form of two young women who wound up together even after one discovered the other was transgendered. Catfish is heartbreaking in its earnestness and striving to understand why some people invest so much in something so ephemeral (answer: they are sad and lonely) and why others keep up elaborate, years-long ruses (answer: they are sad and lonely).

The show's genius lies in its ability to invest you in the wonderland the sad-sack-of-the-week has convinced themself is reality and make you hope against hope that hot Abby really will walk out of that mobile home.

When I watch Catfish, I want to believe as badly as the people whose emotional lives are at stake. And what's TV for if not the suspension of disbelief?
