Recently, when out with friends, we were approached by a young man who was without a doubt hitting on us. Flattering, yes. But also potentially creepy. I mean, I’ve taught kids in my metro area for 20 years. Lots of those kids are full fledged adults now.
Adults who can drink in bars. And hit on older women. Oh, I shudder to think… And it made me ponder. If I’m really bailing on The List, then perhaps my preconceived notions of the proper age for my next boyfriend (two years older or two years younger) should be tossed out too.
After all, I am apparently still  someone worth flirting with, or that young stud man wouldn’t have been hitting on me, right? So, I started my highly scientific research, which consisted mostly of asking my friends and browsing the Internet which we all know contains all the pertinent information necessary for life. Apparently, there’s a mathematical formula oh Gawd here she goes again with math: [Your age] / 2 + 7 = [Date’s Age] Therefore, if we plug in my age (and we’ll go ahead and round UP to my next birthday – not because I want to be 42 faster, but because 42 is evenly divisible by 2 and we like easy math here at The Madness.
42 / 2 + 7 = 28 So, 28…seems slightly reasonable until I calculate that as a 22-year-old first year teacher, I had 12-year-olds in my 6th grade class who are now…34. Therefore, to err on the side of caution, I think I shouldn’t date any one younger than 35 (Gives me a little wiggle room for any kid who might have been retained, or who might have been in my student teaching semester).
There, I have the bottom of my range: 35 years old. Feels better already. But then there’s the top of the range to contend with. After all, I don’t have aspirations of being like Anna Nicole Smith.
That’s almost creepier than accidentally dating a former student. And I did date a guy who was just a tad too old for me once, and it DID feel like I was dating a friend of my dad’s…and although I like some of those guys, I definitely don’t want to date them. So I created a formula to determine the top end of my range: [My dad’s age]/2 + 14 = [The oldest man I would date] When I plug in my dad’s age (and we’ll use his current age because it’s a nice even number — and he won’t mind if I publish his age on the Internet, right?): 68/2 + 14 = 48 You’re probably wondering where the 14 came from?
Well, it’s my favorite number, plus it’s a multiple of seven from the original formula, so that almost makes it seem like it fits, and that’s good enough logic for any kind of dating math formula in my world. Ya know? So, the oldest man I would date at this point would be 48. So there you have it. My range starts at 35 (which keeps me firmly out of the “cougar” category thank you very much) and stretches to 48 (which is not that close to my dad’s age and away from the freaky “gold-digging” Anna Nicole image too) .
Which I think is reasonable, don’t you? I love it. And I totally get it. When I was dating (phew, done with that!), I had my max and min ages, too… but they weren’t quite so wide. Good to know that you won’t be dating your dad at least 😉 I married a man almost 6 years older than me and … it is funny but there are definitely generational differences. It works though – and yay you for being hit on! But. If you’re not yet 42.
and you started teaching at 22, that’s 19ish years. If kids were 12 when you taught them, how are they 34 now? Because I love math, too. Michelle recently posted.. • Ouch! Too much math! You are hurting my brain! My brother who is recently divorced and is 40 years old, is dating a 25 year old.
Just typing it made me throw up in my mouth a little. I refer to her as his “womanchild”. I don’t think he likes that. When he asked me if I would “try to be nice to her” I said, “Sweetheart!
Don’t worry your little head! I think you forget that I’m a MOM. Kids LOVE me!” Don’t know why he didn’t laugh. I guess pedophiles just don’t have a sense of humor. •
