I've owned many trucks in my years but this one hands down gets the worst fuel economy when you strap a trailer to it, even an empty one. Heck I can put my empty landscape trailer behind my wifes RAV4 and it gets better fuel economy then my F-150. I am running the 91 octane performance/tow tune and it has zero effect when towing. Normal driving I've improved some. I get over 20 mpg not towing and get between 9-10 mpg towing a #5000 TT.. I've got over 23,000 miles on it now and while the non towing mpg's have gotten better with age, the towing mileage has been the same since the first tow..
Nature of the beast I'm afraid.. To get 365hp/420tq out of a little 3.5L V6, you gotta be putting some fuel to the thing.. Those dual turbos probably aren't helping either!
But, you gotta love the power it gives! I tow my little #5000 TT around like it's not even there compared to the old 97 F150 with the 5.4 towing the same TT.. Anyway, I can tell you that if I towed at 70-75 mph, I'd only be getting 7 mpg's too...
When I drive that fast not towing, I'll get a lot less than the 20 mpg's I get going 65 mph. So, you gotta decide if you want to pay to go 75 mph or save a bit and go 65 mph..
Good luck! Mitch I just towed a similar travel trailer about 250 miles with elevation decreasing from about 1100 ft to sea level and got 10.2 mpg measured. Today, I made the return trip and the computer said 9.0 mpg. Will update when I fill up tomorrow with the actual value.
